Nayar Department of Computer Science Department of Computer Science Columbia University Columbia University New York, NY 10027 New York, NY 10027 [email protected] [email protected] Abstract The problem of accurate depth estimation using stereo in the presence of specular re ection is addressed. Specular reection, a fundamental and ubiquitous re ection mechanism, is viewpoint dependent and can cause large intensity di erences at corresponding points, resulting in signi cant depth errors. We analyze the physics of specular re ection and the geometry of stereopsis which lead to a relationship between stereo vergence, surface roughness, and the likelihood of a correct match. Given a lower bound on surface roughness, an optimal binocular stereo con guration can be determined which maximizes precision in depth estimation despite specular re ection. However, surface roughness is di cult to estimate in unstructured environments. Therefore, trinocular con gurations, independent of surface roughness, are determined such that at each scene point visible to all sensors, at least one stereo pair can produce correct depth. We have developed a simple algorithm to reconstruct depth from the multiple stereo pairs.

Stereo in the Presence of Specular Reeection

The problem of accurate depth estimation using stereo in the presence of specular reection is addressed. Specular re ection is viewpoint dependent and can cause large intensity di erences at corresponding points. Hence, mismatches can result causing signi cant depth errors. Current stereo algorithms largely ignore specular re ection which is a fundamental re ection phenomenon from surfaces, bot...

Binocular Stereo in the Presence of Specular Re ectionDinkar

We address the problem of accurate depth estimation using stereo in the presence of specular reeec-tion. Specular reeection is viewpoint dependent and can cause large intensity diierences at corresponding points in stereo images. Hence, mismatches could result causing signiicant depth errors. Our approach seeks to determine a scene independent optimal stereo connguration such that intensity mis...

3-D Model-Based Motion Compensation from Multiview Facial Image Sequences using a Specular Light Re ection Model

A method for estimating the position, shape and 3-D motion of the human head from a multiview image sequence is presented. Threedimensional motion is estimated by using an approach which also takes into consideration the photometric e ects of motion, assuming a specular illumination re ection model. Gauss-Newton optimization is used to estimate the illumination and 3-D motion parameters. An ell...

Recovering cylindric and conic surfaces from contours and reflections

Cylindric and conic metallic parts are considered, which are subject to surface treatments (such as, e.g., lathe ®nishing or grinding) that make both Lambertian re ̄ection models and purely specular ones inadequate. A new re ̄ection model is introduced for such surface treatments, and a method is derived for the determination of the pose and the intrinsic geometric parameter of a cylindric surfac...
